I was on my way home from a short tour. I and my friend were traveling by train. We started from “Bidhannagar Road”. As it was a Sunday (14’Th Jan, 2007) the train was almost deserted 4-5 passengers were there in the entire compartment. I and my friend were sitting almost facing each other. As the position was not quite good for chatting I requested my fellow passenger sitting to my left to shift a bit so that we can it exactly facing each other. He was in his late 40s or early 50s. His dresses were quite torn and untidy. He was reading a “Bengali” economics book. He gave me a bit wired look but placed his bag in his lap and shifted as I requested. So I thanked him. This suddenly changed the entire situation. He gave me a very angry look and shouted in his top voice in Bengali “you …………. young generation ………..why r u saying thank you…………..are u all wanna behave like foreigners……..do u know the exact way of speaking…………. This is the all fault of u guys & damn left front (the current ruling government here in West Bengal)”. This made both of us a bit ajar and we both started arguing. We crossed him by saying who is perfect in this world. But he suddenly changed lane and then we realized something is wrong about this man. He gave us a long lecture about the history of West Bengal government and its English policy and abruptly expressed his views about it. Then suddenly without bothering about our views started giving lecture on current state of industrialization in West Bengal. We realized that our journey is going to be very crazy. He opened his bag and gave me a page of “AAJKAL” (a local newspaper) and almost forced me to read an article about the views about industrialization of different economist. Then another lecture started about what great economists think, what he thinks and what West Bengal government should do on the issue of industrialization. We were almost feeling like mad and we tried to avoid him by looking outside but his lecture continued. I was planning to avoid him by leaving the compartment in the next station. Suddenly he asked “how far will u go………..BALLYGANGE?” I realized BALLYGANGE was his destination and I was so happy inside coz the station was not far. I told him that we are going to travel more. It appeared that he was a bit heart broken as he was going to loose two very good listeners. As his destination was approaching he tried to tell all he had to say with an amazing speed. He told about his educational qualification which gave us hint about why he is so frustrated. He told that he is ME and B. Tech in mechanical form Jadavpur University. He was trying to do his doctorate for last 30 years but could not start it due to some political and paper difficulties. And he is till trying. May be he is a bachelor as his frustration also showed when he told us about his relative’s marriages. Who married whom etc ………When the train was almost reaching BALLYGANGE he uttered his final words (to me) “……………I told u all these as u r only 2-3 years younger to me…………..else I should not have told u all this ……….”and left both of us in utter confusion. Later I examined myself in front of mirror…………… form which angle I look like just 2-3 years younger than a almost 50 year old man ……………… I failed to notice …….
Finally all u people of Kolkata who catch train from “Bidhannagar road” or travel in that section ………….. beware of this man and think twice before you say “thank you” .
